Diastasis Recti Abdominal Muscles
Otherwise known as the “gap” or abdominal separation.
During pregnancy the tissue structure (linea alba) holding your abdominal muscles together stretches to allow room for your growing baby and uterus, creating "the gap". Around 2 out of 3 women will experience abdominal separation during pregnancy and for some this will continue to be present post-partum.
The presentation of your abdominal separation will vary depending on the position and size of your baby throughout your pregnancy, previous pregnancies, having multiple births, and the outcome of your labour and delivery.
The correct exercise post-partum can help improve the integrity and strength of your linea alba and minimise the gap. Regaining strength and integrity will help you to maintain good posture, reduce the risk of low back pain, avoid long-term incontinence, aid with digestion, and help you return to normal activities with ease.
